Oh Yeah

Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

I don't understand what It / She / He is. But I DO understand what She / He / It isn't.

He / It / She is NOT me, my committee or anyone else in the boat with me.

"as we understood Him" is a strange statement...I don't get it.
I think it means, to turn our will over...to God as best you are able to "know" God (even if that understanding is very limited maybe?)

Philosophically speaking, if you know what something is NOT, it seems that you must first know what something is...maybe these things you say He isn't is actually smaller pieces of a greater whole.

Anyways, I think the idea overall is to "surrender" to something greater than you (or than the committee or than the others in the same boat) to a power much larger than you all, or inclusive of you all and more?

Tough to do so...I like to drive!

Bear: Thanks for your comment. "God as we understood him" is common within AA literature and to me it means someone's higher power - whatever it may be...however it is understood by the individual. This small point allows a lot of people to try and remain in AA. It means AA is not a "religious" organization. Not surprisingly, a lot of AA members do not arrive as religious people.

Along those same lines, I found myself unable to believe in God because I could not define what God is. Now I know I don't have to do that. I don't really have to know anything about God...but it helps me to start defining by eliminating things God is not. Like creating a picture by drawing the negative space. Personally I don't have to know what God is to realize that I am not God.

As I'm sure you know, these are only my interpretations...my understanding. And I absolutely agree with you that the bottom line is to surrender, and it is very tough to do.

Thanks again for your contribution.
